July 10, 2007

The regular July monthly meeting of the Oakland City Commission was held on July 10, 2007. The Commissioners present were: John Blubaugh, Tim Hunt, Eric Watt, and Jimmy Hopkins.  Mayor Mansfield was also present.

The normal beginning to the meeting where the minutes from the previous meeting, special meeting, and the treasure’s report were all approved as written.  No further discussion on these at this time.

Portable radios were the first big item on the agenda.  I had discussed with Brent Childress at BRADD about any grant money available and found that there will be about $7500.00 available in near future.  A letter will be sent to the city followed by an application the we can fill out and return to request money.

Next was a Local Government Tax Refund.  The City recently received a letter stating that in 2001 we were overpaid and requested a refund plus interest.  According to the state of Kentucky  the request is not valid because the statute of limitations on refund request is only two years.  Therefore the request was not acted upon except to send a copy of the Kentucky State Insurance Codes that stated the two year statute of limitations.

Street signs that need to be replaced are as follows:  Oakland, Mills, Kelly, Williams, along with four Stop signs, School sign, and Rail Road Crossing Sign.  These items are to be ordered as soon as possible.  A report is to be given at the August meeting.

Miscellaneous Business:

I brought up an issue about purchasing some concrete traffic stops for the city to replace the old rotten rail road ties now lining the city park.  I will get bids and report on this at the August meeting.

Mayor Mansfield will contact CSX Railroad requarding the fact of closing the crossing in Oakland.  Anytime the tracks are closed the City of Oakland needs to be notified so that a PSA can be done to inform the residence.  This is a main through fare in Oakland and a potential hazard if there is an emergency.

I attended the WCWD meeting held on July 5, 2007.  A project that will upgrade the current water lines from 10” to 12” and upgrade the current Hydrants will begin in the near future.  In addition new pumping stations will be installed closer to Smiths Grove.
