February 13, 2007

Oakland City Commission met on February 13, 2007. The commissioners present were John Blubaugh, Tim Hunt, and Eric Watt, and Jimmy Hopkins. Mayor Billy Mansfield was also present. As promised I will be posting a brief of each meeting and current issues that will affect you as residents.

First order of business was to review the minutes and financial reports from January 2007. Both the minutes and financial report was passed as presented to the commission. Then per the State of Kentucky we discussed the Open Records act and signed the documents sent to us stating that we discussed and reviewed the Open Records Act. Next on the agenda was street repair money. Once again as per a state initiative the Oakland City Commission passed a resolution to receive money from the state for street repairs. Basically it means that Oakland will receive $3,460.00 from the state to put in our road funds. Just a side note, it takes approximately $32,000.00 per mile to resurface and repair streets and roadways. So, this money from the state is just a drop in the bucket to what we spend on repairs.

The first big issue of the night was a proposal by Tim Hunt to open bids for city – wide garbage collection by one provider. We currently have as many as three providers on the streets of Oakland during a week. Narrowing that down to one provider will cut down on congestion and in the long run road repairs. Also, with an exclusive contract (not mandatory) residential garbage collection prices will go down. By a unanimous vote, Tim Hunt will prepare the RFB and Specifications for city – wide garbage collection for Oakland to be presented at the next meeting or special called meeting if necessary.

Under the miscellaneous category: The Oakland City Commission unanimously passed the bid from the Sewing and Vacuum Center to purchase a new vacuum cleaner for City Hall and the Community Center. The commission also discussed 2006 property taxes outstanding. We currently have $71.08 outstanding for 2006.

Final discussion of the evening was about Emergency Management. As stated this issue will be ongoing throughout the year. Bill and Marylyn Feldkaup (residents) were in attendance and have offered their assistance. Bill is a licensed by the FCC (Amateur Extra Class) as a Ham Radio Operator. He has offered his assistance in being a communication link in the event of emergency and other forms of communication is knocked out. THANK YOU, Bill and Marylyn for your willingness to assist the City of Oakland. In addition, Commissioner Eric Watt has designated his house in Williams Gate Place at the emergency shelter and contact point for North of the railroad tracks. He has a 2,700 square foot basement (approximate) which will be able to hold the residents north of the tracks. The Emergency Management Plan will be an issue that is ongoing in updating, training, and communicating the information to you the residents.

As always feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments that I can help you with. I am and will continue to be available to you.
